Reiki Demystified - Q&A with Jasmin Harsono, Reiki Master/Teacher
To celebrate World Meditation Day, we asked Jasmin Harsono, Reiki Master/Teacher to share her insight into the world of Reiki, what is it, what to expect, the benefits and more...

Firstly, can you start by telling us a bit about yourself?

I am Jasmin Harsono, a Reiki Master/Teacher, Sonic Artist and Intuitive Wellbeing Guide. The founder of Emerald and Tiger, a lifestyle brand and concept that promotes positive awareness through a vibrant connection to the mind, body and spirit.

What is Reiki and what first drew you to it?

Reiki is pronounced "Ray-Key" Rei means 'spirit', and Ki stands for 'energy'. Together it can be translated as 'universal energy’. Often described as 'love and light’, Reiki higher finer vibrational energy is energy that is all around us where you experience coming home to your true self, a sense of oneness.

The system of Reiki was developed in Japan by Mikao Usui. I am trained in both Western and Eastern lineages. It is a spiritual practice and healing modality for the mind, body and spirit.

Reiki is not just' hands on healing' which it is commonly associated with but a way of life, living consciously, using principles, meditation, breath, sound, and other techniques that work in harmony.

Reiki supports healing on all four of our bodies mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. It is entirely safe and can be shared with all living things and situations, with adults, children, babies, pets, plants, spaces and so on. Reiki is a complementary or alternative therapy that focuses on energy and spiritual healing used by the NHS. Reiki works with all other medical and therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

I discovered Reiki when I was recovering from malignant melanoma surgery and was interested in alternative medicine and therapies.

What are some of the benefits of Reiki?

Reiki tunes into our own specific healing needs. It promotes our bodies natural ability to heal itself. Some benefits include reducing the impact of stress, relieving pain, inflammation, stiffness and tension. It also helps to alleviate anxiety and depression restoring emotional balance and encourages higher self-esteem. It is an aid for positive thinking and meditation.

What to expect from a Reiki meditation?

At the start of the meditation, I will concentrate on helping you to settle and arrive in the space – my aim is to help you to feel safe and supported. You will be guided through a powerful energy breath awareness and positive affirmations, which will help you to get into flow with your breathing, deepening your experience and allowing you to open up to receive high vibrational energy.

You will receive Reiki as a group and one on one. Come with an open heart, as we fall deep into the heart centre – home. You will be able to relax and rest completely, allowing the mind, body and soul to receive deep healing.

We also share sound within our sessions, sonic healing using higher healing vibrations and frequencies that deeply resonate within the body, our body is around 70% water and sound travels and flows easily. We share Gong, Sound Bowls to intuitive soulful vocals, and much more each chosen specially for that session.

More benefits include mental and emotional benefits can include improved sleep patterns, feeling more positive and energised, letting go of suppressed emotions and unhealthy patterns, boosting self-esteem and reducing stress and anxiety.
Benefits to the body include improved metabolism and digestion, releasing muscle tension and increasing energy.

Energy healing meditations have been shown to improve wellbeing for many conditions including respiratory issues, IBS, asthma, ME, headaches, sleeplessness and low energy.

Meditation is also good for the soul – it expands inner awareness, creates a deeper self-connection and inner wisdom, deepens creative and sensual energies and helps to create a feeling of peace.

It's Mental Health Awareness Week, and World Meditation Day today the chosen topic is based around 'Body Image' can you share a wellbeing tip that we can use as part of our daily routine?

Start with a simple three-minute exercise in the morning, afternoon and evening to connect and be aware of your breath. Breath in through your nose and out through your mouth and begin by noticing the sensations of your breath. Does your breath feel shallow or deep? Does the air feel cold or warm? Tune into what you are experiencing as you breathe. Give yourself space here. If the mind wonders come back to your breath, breathing in and breathing out. Say the words' breathing in' and 'breathing out' to support you.

When you are a ready place both hands around three inches below your belly button on an energy centre in Reiki that is called the HARA. This energy centre deeply roots us into Earth energy, where we can feel grounded into our bodies. We focus here on breathing in our innate power and wisdom that is within us all.

Breathe deeply in and repeat the following affirmation "I am empowered" out loud or silently.

Your breath should be equal on the in and out breaths. Each day add on a minute until you build it up to approximately ten minutes. Take time to be completely present with your breath. If the mind wonders just come back to your breath, focus on where you breathing into and the affirmation you are repeating.

This exercise begins with mindful breathing, connecting you to your breath. Then we add a layer as you ground your mind and body into repeating an affirmation to enhance and shift your energy and vibration.

I would recommend journaling your breathing journey to keep yourself accountable. After 21 days you will feel more connected to this mindful practice.
